History

Pakistan Library Association (Punjab Branch) founded under PLA constitution, is the professional wing representing the Librarians working in the Punjab Province. It endeavors to promote the interests of librarians and librarianship in the Punjab. Its mission is to enhance the professional image and status of librarians of Punjab province. It supplements the policies and programs of PLA(Headquarters). Punjab Branch has always remained very much active for the promotion of librarianship than any other provincial branch. It has more than 600 members which is the largest figure than any other branch. Its membership is increasing day by day.

PLA (Punjab Branch) is the voice of librarians of the Punjab province. During the past years Punjab Branch has been contributing a lot for the promotion and the development of librarianship. It organized seminars, workshops and conferences for the up lift of the profession. With its enthusiastic efforts Government of the Punjab established Directorate of Public Libraries Punjab in March 1981 and Punjab Library Foundation in June 1985. Both these institutions are the milestones in the history of librarianship in Punjab. PLA computer training center established in 1992 is organizing computer training courses for the library professionals to keep them abreast with latest technologies. A bimonthly newsletter is being published under the auspices of PLA (Punjab Branch), which covers news and views of the professionals working in province regarding the promotion of librarianship. PLA(PB) encourages and welcomes librarians to support and share with its programs and efforts being rendered for the cause of librarianship.
